Waltz Receives 2015 Principal of the Year Award2 min read

Since 1978, David Waltz has been serving in Michigan District Lutheran schools. He attended Trinity Lutheran School in Monroe, Mich. and then went to Concordia University Ann Arbor to become a Lutheran teacher. Waltz began his ministry at St. Thomas Lutheran School in Eastpointe, Mich., spent four years at Zion Lutheran School in Bay City, Mich., and since 1999 has served as principal of St. John Lutheran School in Fraser, Mich. His ministry has been marked by his ability to follow the Lord’s lead and humbly serve Him in everything he does. Waltz currently provides leadership not only to his school, but coordinates the monthly meetings of the Macomb principals. He just recently finished a two-year term as Chair of the Principal Planning Committee for the District. Waltz also serves on the District Accreditation Commission and often consults or captains teams at other schools. His fellow principals mention a few words when considering him for this award.

  • Humble: Waltz is a true servant leader who does many things to further the kingdom without any need or desire to be recognized. He was amazed and surprised when his name was read as the winner of this award.
  • Strategic: Waltz is a careful planner who tries to ensure that every detail is covered. He is known for making lists and carefully crossing off each item as it is completed. He attempts to really understand issues and then approach them in a detailed, sequential manner.
  • Joyful: Waltz is a fun person to be around. Not only is he happily married to his wife, Carol, and a recent grandpa, but he is also known for his love of trains and his unusual trips by train across China or into the Rocky Mountains. He exemplifies the joy in ministry found in those who realize they are God’s tools to influence others.

Rev. Brad Smith, pastor at St. John, Fraser says, “It’s fitting that all of his hard work, passion, and organization for Lutheran education, children, and, most of all, his Lord Jesus, be recognized. He is a great team player who only desires to see excellence in education and love for the Lord grow!”

Waltz is truly a worthy recipient of this year’s recognition. In his own words he states, “I love teaching the young and the adult about Christ. As a teacher, I enjoy the learning process. I have found great satisfaction in seeing former students entrust me with their children and become Lutheran teachers.”

We congratulate Waltz on this recognition and thank God for the many faithful principals who, like him, serve in our Michigan District Lutheran schools.
