The John E. Herrmann Award will be presented in the fall of 2022 to one of our Lutheran Day Schools that has utilized the following steward education activities as developed by the Michigan District Stewardship Committee. The award consists of a plaque for the school, recognition on the John E. Herrmann Award plaque in the Michigan District office, and a ministry grant of $2,000.
To be eligible for the John E. Herrmann award, the Lutheran Day School will participate in/sponsor several of the following activities in its school and congregation and submit their school on our online submission form by June 15, 2022:
- Participation in the “God’s Children Are God’s Disciples” steward education emphasis.
- Participation in the 2021-2022 Hearts for Jesus program.
- Implementation of a program that recognizes a student(s) from each grade “caught” in the act of being a steward.
- Complete Teacher/Leader evaluations of the “God’s Children Are God’s Disciples” steward education emphasis. The fillable form can be found here: God’s Children Are God’s Disciples Evaluation Form.
- Creative ways to involve and integrate the church family into the stewardship work of the school.
- The Lutheran School will create and participate in a servant event that will put into practice the steward education emphasis from one of the four chapel talks found in the God’s Children Are God’s Disciples Examples of servant events: food drive, fleece blanket party, homeless kits, marathon, bike riding, healthy body program (exercise, diet, etc.), nursing home outreach (singing, making cards, readings stories, playing instruments, etc.), taking care of farm animals/pets.
- Photos and narrative of community stewardship activities completed as part of the “God’s Children Are God’s Disciples” steward education emphasis.
“BONUS” Activities
- Use of children’s messages in congregation’s worship services as confirmed by pastor.
- Use of an annual steward education emphasis for the congregation such as “Faithful Stewards of God’s Gifts” or “Fellow Workers on God’s Team” available on the district’s website.
- Use of the Stewardship Offering Verses for the 1 or 3-year lectionary series also available on the district’s website.
The award will be determined by participation in the ten activities listed above and through a percentage of students participating in the program both within the school and the community at large.

The John E. Herrmann Award
The John E. Herrmann Award was established to recognize faithful stewards in the Michigan District, and to encourage others to greater stewardship within their home churches. It is named after one of our Synod’s most influential men in the area of steward education.
Each school principal is encouraged to submit an entry outlining the activities participated in to the Michigan District Stewardship Committee by May 31, 2022. Notification of the award winner will take place in October and presentation of the award will take place in the home school/congregation of the winner. Award winners will receive a commemorative plaque and will have their school name placed on the John E. Herrmann Award plaque in the Michigan District Office. In addition, a $2,000 ministry grant will be given to their school.
