SUMMARY:Best Practices Heartland - CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:A best practice for ministry is to be both optimistic and realistic – and to discern the difference between the two. Our Best Practices Heartland 2020 planning team\, while filled with optimism\, has arrived at what we believe to be a realistic acknowledgement of the inevitable. We have therefore determined that it is in everyone’s best interest to announce today that the 2020 conference will not be able to take place. \nOur team has a profound sense of disappointment about this and was extremely reluctant to reach this decision\, but we have absolutely no confidence that the governor of Michigan will open up our state to the degree that would be necessary to host even a scaled-down conference. \nCanceling now allows our school to put those days back into their educational calendar. That will be especially helpful this year. In addition\, local hotels and caterers can readjust their schedules and conference presenters and attendees should have adequate time to do the same. \nWe also discussed the potential for some kind of virtual conference\, but quickly came to the conclusion that one of the greatest benefits of Best Practices conferences is the mutual encouragement and support that can come only through face-to-face contact. We are hoping that the great line-up of plenary and break-out presenters that were scheduled for this year will be able to join us next year. \nAs we are able to determine dates and speakers for 2021\, we will be sure to share that information. \nWe continue to pray for all who are engaged in any kind of ministry in the Lord’s church and encourage you to also pray unceasingly for both the Phoenix conference scheduled for February and Best Practices Heartland 2021.

This picture is also the theme of the 2020 Lutheran Adult Gathering. Join us at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island\, October 9-11\, 2020\, as we celebrate our LIFE TOGETHER in Christ\, in service\, with hope. Our speakers will encourage and challenge us as disciples of Jesus and offer suggestions for us to take back to our congregations. DESCRIPTION:The Church has a more defined role to play in the present racial unrest. The unrest has exposed prejudices and biases which are exhibited in many ways. The Gospel-confessing Church—pictured by Jesus in Matthew 5:14\, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden” (ESV)—has the privilege and responsibility of pushing forward with all the members of the body of Christ to educate about\, and work to heal\, the racial injustices that exist in society and\, because we are sinners\, in the Church as well. Join us on October 15 to learn together more about being a light to the world as we move forward in these tenuous times\, praying for—and working towards—racial healing. \nPlease note: those who choose to attend this conference in person are required to wear a mask and adhere to proper social distancing protocols. \nIn the event we are unable to hold events with up to 50 people or more\, we will look to gather either by circuits or all attend virtually. DESCRIPTION:In this time when Covid-19 restrictions have lifted and we are considering how to function in non-anxious\, healthy ways\, this conference will explore how you can be merciful to yourself—in your spirit\, body\, mind\, relationships\, and ministry context—as your Father is merciful to you. Because you are loved by God through Christ\, come plan for how to offer His love to yourself and others. You will leave this conference with concrete action plans for how to grow and maintain such health. \nNote: All deacons will also need to complete their required paperwork and return them to Martha Wohlfeil by August 31.  You can download fillable forms here:  Deacon Forms and Policies. Be sure to start this process early and follow the instructions provided as you will need to collect signatures from various congregation members/supervising pastor etc.

SUMMARY:Intentional Interim Ministry Continuing Education
DESCRIPTION:Serving in a variety of leadership capacities as an Intentional Interim Pastor has enough challenges as it is! However\, in recent years two critical phenomena have simultaneously made congregational ministry even more challenging in this post-Christian era: the decline of the Church’s central place in community and the resultant aging and shrinking of congregations (with some notable exceptions) along with the resulting financial challenges to “keep the doors open\,” and the continued decline in the number of pastors available to serve in congregations. How might God want to use this time of often painful transition to renew and even expand His Kingdom? Intentional Interim Pastors are at the forefront of the conversation as they serve congregations in transition at critical junctures in their life cycle. \nHow do we have “Kingdom conversations” that go beyond “survival”? \n\nHow do we talk about closure?\nWhen is “revitalization” NOT an option?\nWhat is a “Legacy congregation”?\nWhat are the pros and cons of a dual parish?\nWhat is a “cathedral model”?\nHow do we talk about mergers?\nWhat part does “Kingdom geography” play in the discussion?\n\nGoing forward\, we will need several Interim pastors who have the courage and gifts to intentionally engage in these challenging conversations. DESCRIPTION:Pastors\, their families\, and congregations are exhausted. This has been a time of too many challenges and too many decisions. And\, yet\, God remains faithful even in the hardest of times. God’s faithfulness enables and enlivens us for such a time as this. When we are exhausted\, God gives us rest. When fearful\, God declares\, “Fear not!” When confounded by this world\, God comforts us with His faithfulness. Because of who God is\, we are able to be a faithful presence in this world. “And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14.
