National Lutheran Schools Week Begins This Sunday2 min read

National Lutheran Schools Week is upon us. Our 140+ Lutheran schools, close to 17,000 students, and 1,000+ educators from across the Michigan District will be celebrating NLSW the last full week of January or the first week of March. (Since Synod moved NLSW to January several years ago, we still have quite a few schools that celebrate in March.)

This year’s National Lutheran Schools’ Week theme is In All Things. If that sounds familiar, it is in partnership with the National Youth Gathering theme for this summer in Houston, Texas. It is based on the verse from Colossians 1:15–20 which says:

“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.”

What a blessing to know that during National Lutheran Schools Week—and every week of the year—our students are in an environment where Christ is present In All Things! We all need that daily reminder, especially in our schools as they continue to move through another challenging year.

Even during this Covid craziness, our schools find ways to recognize NLSW and have some fun. Whether it is wacky hair day, minute-to-win-it games in the gym, unique service projects, special lunches for the teachers, educational assemblies, or extra recess, this week tends to be one of the highlights of the year. If you are a product of Lutheran schools, you probably have a memory or two of celebrating NLSW with your friends and school community. We are grateful for the volunteers and staff that help to make these days so memorable. Keep an eye on your favorite school’s website and social media posts as well as our Michigan District posts to see how everyone is celebrating!
