ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The seventh annual Concordia University Ann Arbor (CUAA) Veterans Day Celebration will take place Tuesday, Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. on the University’s campus. Festivities will include a welcome reception for veterans and guests in the Field House, lunch with guest speaker Rear Admiral Donald Muchow, a graduate of Concordia Senior College (which transferred administration to the Concordia University System in 1977), a flag dedication service, U.S. Coast Guard helicopter demonstrations, an honorary veterans stars ceremony and more. Student escorts will be available for veterans who need assistance.
According to Dr. Robert McCormick, event organizer and member of the CUAA faculty, the celebration is a way to pause and pay tribute to the members of the armed forces who have fought to preserve our nation and our freedom. McCormick himself served in the U.S. Army, understands what it means to serve and knows why Veterans Day is so important.
“It is a distinct honor to present an amazing day at CUAA, not only for veterans, but for faculty, staff, and students who demonstrate their servant leadership each and every day,” said Dr. McCormick. “We hope the community will join us so, together, we can reflect and make a true impact in the lives of our service men and women.”
This year, residents of Ann Arbor and surrounding communities are invited to join students and faculty in preparing care packages for local troops serving overseas. CUAA is working with the West Point Graduates Auxiliary and HomeFront Hugs, a national network of volunteers who support the families of deployed military personnel, to prepare care packages for individual service members. Packages can include letters and cards with morale-boosting notes, foot powder, high protein snack bars, trail mix, homemade cookies, air fresheners, individual packs of snack foods like peanuts and sunflower seeds, AA batteries, crossword and other puzzle books, magazines, CDs and DVDs, bandanas or handkerchiefs, empty Ziplock bags, small toys and hard candy for children soldiers meet, thin stocking caps, toothpaste, dental floss, lip balm, and soccer and Nerf balls.
In addition, CUAA will welcome Zoey the Comfort Dog from its sister school, Concordia University Wisconsin. Zoey is dog specially trained for Comfort Ministry, that is, the dog is trained for visits to VA hospitals, local nursing homes and local Lutheran grade schools to provide companionship and care for those in need. Zoey is handled by Dave Enters, director of counseling, CUW.
